Assessment Overview
Okay, stay with me here, because this assessment might seem a little dumb or silly in both presentation and purpose. 😂
But don’t let the playful presentation fool you. The Good Buddy is a genuinely challenging handgun assessment.
The Good Buddy features two challenges, Quad-4 and 10-4, built around a friendly, smiling 4-inch target. Both are shot at 4 yards with a 4-second time limit. Quad-4 requires four accurate hits, while 10-4 raises the demand to ten.
Quad-4: Is your gun a Good Buddy?
Successfully completing the Quad-4 suggests your concealed carry gun is a Good Buddy. It’s a firearm you can draw, present, and shoot accurately under a reasonable time constraint.
10-4: Are YOU a Good Buddy to your gun?
Successfully completing the 10-4 suggests you’ve put in the time and developed the skills to be a Good Buddy to your concealed carry gun. Ten accurate hits in four seconds is no small accomplishment.
Two challenges. One smiling target. Four seconds.

Course of Fire
The Good Buddy consists of two separate challenges, the Quad-4 and the 10-4. Both are shot from concealment at 4 yards, using a 4-inch circular target.
Quad-4: Is Your Gun a Good Buddy?
- Rounds: 4
- Time Limit: 4.00 seconds
10-4: Are YOU a Good Buddy to Your Gun?
- Rounds: 10
- Time Limit: 4.00 seconds
Scoring & Results
Both challenges use a simple pass/fail standard. To pass, all required shots must land inside or touch the 4-inch scoring circle within 4.00 seconds.
Line breaks count. Any miss or time over 4.00 seconds results in a failed attempt.
Record your actual completion time, even when you pass. Tracking your times gives you another way to measure improvement beyond simply meeting the standard.
Shoot & Share
Think you’ve got a Good Buddy? Let’s see it!
Give Quad-4 or 10-4 a shot, record your results, and share your attempt with us.
Passing is great, but don’t be afraid to share an unsuccessful attempt. Sometimes those are the runs we learn the most from.
Tag @CasualFirearmsTraining & @CasualFirearms and let us know which challenge you attempted, what you were shooting, and how you did.
And remember, your Good Buddy is always smiling. Even when you’re not. 😁
